Window Maintenance Tips: Keep Your Windows Performing Their Best

Well-maintained windows last longer, look better, and help keep your home warm, secure, and draught-free. Here are practical window maintenance tips you can do yourself — plus the warning signs that it’s time to call in a professional.

1) Clean frames and glass the right way

• Use warm soapy water and a soft cloth — avoid abrasive pads that can scratch glass and damage finishes.

• Rinse and dry to prevent streaks and water marks, especially on darker frames.

• For uPVC, avoid solvent-based cleaners (they can dull or weaken the surface).

2) Check and clear drainage (weep) holes

Most modern windows have small drainage holes to let any moisture escape. If these get blocked with dirt or paint, water can build up and cause damp patches or frame issues. A quick check every few months can prevent bigger problems.

3) Inspect seals and gaskets for gaps

Rubber seals help stop draughts and water ingress. Look for splits, shrinkage, or areas that have come loose. If you can feel a draught around the sash, it’s worth getting it checked — a small repair can restore performance.

4) Lubricate moving parts (hinges, locks, handles)

• Use a light silicone spray (avoid heavy oils that attract grit).

• Open and close the window a few times to work it in.

• If a handle feels stiff or a lock doesn’t engage smoothly, don’t force it — it may need adjustment.

5) Reduce condensation (and what it really means)

Condensation on the inside of the glass is usually a ventilation issue, not a window fault — try trickle vents (if fitted), extractor fans, and keeping lids on pans. But if you see misting between the panes, that can indicate a failed sealed unit.
