5 signs it’s time to replace the glass units in your double glazing

If your windows are looking tired or your home feels draughty, the issue isn’t always the whole frame — often it’s the sealed glass unit inside the double glazing that’s failed. Here are 5 clear signs your glass units may need replacing, and what to do next.

1) Mist or condensation between the panes

This is the classic sign of a failed seal. When the perimeter seal breaks down, moisture gets trapped between the panes and you’ll see fogging that you can’t wipe away from either side. Once this happens, the unit’s insulation performance drops.

2) Your rooms feel colder (or hotter) than they used to

Double glazing works by trapping an insulating layer of air (or gas) between panes. If the unit fails, you may notice cold spots near the window, more heat loss in winter, or overheating in summer — even if the frames still look fine.

3) Draughts around the glass area

A draught can come from worn gaskets, poor fitting, or a unit that’s no longer seated correctly. If you feel air movement near the glazing (not just around the opening sash), it’s worth having the unit and seals checked.

4) Visible cracks, chips, or ‘milky’ patches

Any damage to the glass can compromise safety and security. You might also see a cloudy or ‘milky’ look around the edges — another sign the seal has deteriorated. Replacing the glass unit restores clarity and performance.

5) More outside noise than normal

A healthy sealed unit helps reduce noise. If your windows suddenly seem louder, it can indicate the unit has lost its seal or the glazing system isn’t performing as it should.

Do you need to replace the whole window?

Not always. In many cases, you can replace just the sealed glass unit and keep the existing uPVC frame — a cost-effective way to improve comfort, security, and energy efficiency.
